Mas \u00e9 fato ou fic\u00e7\u00e3o?
\nO romance se passa em Mo\u00e7ambique durante uma guerra civil que durou de 1977 a 1992. Depois de tantos anos separados do resto do mundo, regi\u00f5es do pa\u00eds voltaram a ser uma terra de mitos e lendas, divorciada do conhecimento moderno e pensei. Os jovens foram vacinados contra armas? Os homens maus poderiam alcan\u00e7ar seu peito e arrancar seu cora\u00e7\u00e3o? E quem foi o respons\u00e1vel pela guerra? Certamente n\u00e3o foi o povo mo\u00e7ambicano. Os lugares s\u00e3o todos reais, mas e os personagens? Houve uma conspira\u00e7\u00e3o nacional para roubar ajuda, orquestrada do topo? Existem poucas respostas definitivas, mas depois de ler este romance, voc\u00ea ter\u00e1 pelo menos uma vis\u00e3o dos interesses conflitantes em um pa\u00eds dilacerado pela guerra.<\/p>\n

O fundo:
\nJowan Penrose est\u00e1 sofrendo de estresse p\u00f3s-traum\u00e1tico ap\u00f3s um incidente na guerra das Malvinas, quando ele estava no ex\u00e9rcito. Perdido depois de deixar o ex\u00e9rcito, ele consegue um emprego em Mo\u00e7ambique para supervisionar a repara\u00e7\u00e3o de uma frota de ve\u00edculos que est\u00e1 sendo usada para levar ajuda \u00e0s pessoas deslocadas ou empobrecidas pela guerra. Por acaso, ele se depara com um roubo maci\u00e7o de ajuda alimentar, mas ser\u00e1 que ele vai acreditar? Ele pode ser eliminado antes de espalhar a not\u00edcia para o resto do mundo? Dois pistoleiros s\u00e3o contratados para elimin\u00e1-lo pelo chefe regional do sindicato do crime. Jowan acaba fugindo para salvar sua vida por regi\u00f5es que permanecem remotas at\u00e9 hoje.<\/p>\n

A enxada e a arma -The Hoe and the Gun<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chris Marrow levou uma vida extraordin\u00e1ria. Como o her\u00f3i de The Hoe and the Gun, ele foi criado olhando para o Atl\u00e2ntico e para a acidentada costa norte da Cornualha. Ele passou a treinar como oficial de conv\u00e9s em navios de carga refrigerados e viajou pelo mundo, mas assumiu o cargo depois de se casar. Buscando navios e o mar, ele se mudou para as Ilhas Orkney e fundou novos conceitos de balsas inter-ilhas em Orkney e restabeleceu a rota de balsa h\u00e1 muito extinta entre Orkney e Shetland.<\/p>\n

Quando a sua empresa foi adquirida, ele acabou velejando numa embarca\u00e7\u00e3o de desembarque de 95 p\u00e9s com alguns da sua fam\u00edlia para Mo\u00e7ambique, onde operou duas dessas embarca\u00e7\u00f5es para alimentar pessoas deslocadas por longos anos de guerra civil.<\/p>\n

Quando a guerra acabou, ele fundou uma institui\u00e7\u00e3o de caridade para trabalhar com transporte hidrovi\u00e1rio para ajuda, desenvolvimento e socorro, e isso o levou a v\u00e1rios cantos remotos do mundo. Em 1996, ele empreendeu a primeira expedi\u00e7\u00e3o para viajar por rio do Malawi ao Oceano \u00cdndico e de volta pelos rios Shire e Zambeze, e continua a ser uma das \u00fanicas pessoas vivas que o fez. Isso o levou a ser convidado a fazer um estudo sobre a privatiza\u00e7\u00e3o da companhia de navega\u00e7\u00e3o no Lago Malawi, e posteriormente ele assumiu a empresa do governo e administrou-a como uma empresa privada em nome dos interesses do Malawi.<\/p>\n

Entre estas empresas, como algu\u00e9m que fala portugu\u00eas e conhece a costa e os rios daquele pa\u00eds, ofereceu-se para ajudar o esfor\u00e7o de socorro brit\u00e2nico nas catastr\u00f3ficas cheias de Mo\u00e7ambique de 2000 e liderou equipas da RNLI e dos Bombeiros at\u00e9 ao rio Buzi com um Equipe m\u00e9dica francesa para fazer avalia\u00e7\u00f5es m\u00e9dicas.
